Lake Powell is the 2nd largest Dam built in America so far so with such a vast amount of water now usable it made sense for a town to pop up and utilize this resource, thus Page was born.  It is also somewhat of a cross roads between all the great National Parks of lower Utah and upper Arizona; Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon (South and North Rims), Vermillion Cliffs, Monument Valley to name most.  There are also small sites to see; Horseshoe Bend, Lees Ferry Crossing, Rainbow Bridge.  But the best to see in our opinion in the area close to Page is without a doubt Antelope Canyon.  The area is blessed to have tons and tons of what we call 'slot canyons'.  Slot Canyons are extremely narrow voids that twist and turn because the water has cut down through the layers of sedimentary sandstone over the past Millennium to leave behind these fantastical formations.  The most famous of these is Antelope Canyon, probably because it is readily accessible, but also because it is odd worldly in its rock sculptures.  There are 2 areas to see here, upper and lower, and we chose the lower one only because it was cheaper, but it turned out to be a good choice.  Hell if the particular section of Antelope Canyon is good enough to be on the cover of National Geographic, circa mid 80's, then its good enough for me.  If Bill Gates and the Microsoft crew want to take a formation here and use it in their Windows 7 logo, then also good enough for me.  Walking through the Canyon is a sight for sore eyes.  The colors range from bright red to the blueish purple with a million varieties in between and every narrow corner that you turn means that you have to take another photo just to try and capture it.  I took way too many photos on this walk, what was harder was trying to narrow them down to only 5 to put in the blog ...
This weekend that we were in Page coincided with the annual Page Balloon Regatta so we stayed the extra night to see what the fuss was all about.  Ever morning that we were there, we woke to see over 70 Balloons floating in the sky above us.  Ever since our Balloon ride in Cappadoccia, Turkey way back in April we have been more than a little curious with these big bits of plastic with a lot of hot air side them.  That night, Saturday that is, all the Balloons were lines up along Main Street and then inflated.  This was something to see and something that I'd never heard of before.  Audrey and I just walked up and down the street, with the whole Town, admiring the sight that beheld us.  And when all the owners at the same time ignited their flames it did look great, all these balloons lit up at night.  Although we tried to take photo's, none of them came out very well, or at least not like we saw in the flesh.
Page was just supposed to be a stop between two of the places that we most wanted to see; Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon.  We've seen one, its now time to see the other ...
