Neuschwanstein Castle is THE Castle that everyone wants to see.  Even the great man Walt Disney had to use it as a model for his famous Disneyland complexes and its really because of this reason that we have all unconsciously seen it before, never really believing that it came from an actually Castle.  The position is perfection to start with.  Placed on a rocky promontory with access only from one direction, the west, it has a river with steep sides on the south and a vast green plain with scattered glacial lakes on the east and north.  Even further south is the Alps so the backdrop for any photo or drawing has no other comparison.  The thing about the Castle is that it is not very old and even has photo's taken during it's construction.  The site was chosen by King Ludwig the II of Bavaria in 1864 mainly because it was within view of his current residence, Hohenschwangau Castle, which he didn't like that much, so that he could spy on the progress from his study through his state-of-the-art telescope.  Ludwig spent a fair bit of the royal fortune to build his dream Castle, so much so that by 1886 his uncle had him arrested and then declare him insane, hence the often used moniker, Mad King Ludwig.  2 days after his arrest, the King was found dead with many mysteries surrounding how it happened.  But noone can deny what he left behind as his legacy, the world's best and prettiest Castle even if it never got finished.
No venture to the Castle is complete without both a tour inside and then the walk around the surrounding hills to see it from the many vantage points to truely get a good view.  But just our luck; they had closed the Marie's Bridge.  Marie's Bridge is the spot were everyone takes their photo's from as it gives the best view showing the Castle's location on the rock with the plains behind it.  In our instance I had to scramble up to a different spot that was a little dangerous but there was no way that I was going home without that perfect photo.  Inside the Castle is something else.  Originally 85 rooms were supposed to be built but in the end only 15 got finished but even still those are quite impressive.  I didn't look into what was inside the Castle so I was very surprise to find out the a grotto/cave had been one of the rooms that was completed on the 4th level.  This lead outside to a brilliant view over the palins.  I can't imagine what was going through the King's head when he came up with that idea but the end result was rather impressive.  The Throne room and the Ballroom were the other rooms that stood out.  On the way out we had to go through the Kitchen.  This Kitchen has been left in the same condition that it was in back in 1886 and it was huge and modern.  It wouldn't look out of place in today's Castles, all you need to add in is a microwave of two.
Lots and lots of people visit Neuschwanstein Castle every year, 1.3 Million per year at the last count.  My advice to anyone reading this is that you should be one of them over the coming years.  You wont be dissappointed.
Ludwig only ended up sleeping just 11 nights in his obsession before his death at the age of 24.  I kinda wish that he'd lived on just to see what else he could have dreamt up for the rest of us to mavel at well intothe future.
